Individual and Couples Counseling and Psychotherapy
The vast majority of adults seek professional counseling and psychotherapy looking for solutions to either a personal crisis or problems in their relationships.
Having provided crisis intervention and emergency counseling for individuals, couples, and families, and considering the often limited number of sessions available with most clients' managed care plans, I believe it is important to be solution-focused and goal-oriented in our work together so you can find practical answers or solutions to the problems you're facing as quickly as possible.
That having been said, once the necessary coping skills have been developed to deal with a problem effectively, it is not uncommon for clients to want to do deeper work in order to determine why they seem to face the same problems in life over and over again.
While this kind of personal growth takes some time, as we need to work together to uncover the underlying behaviors and beliefs that lead to the same unfulfilling experiences and/or crises in your life, it is more than worth the time and effort involved.
Similarly, if you're seeking couples counseling for help with your relationship, an immediate crisis can often be dealt with and resolved in a few sessions. However, recognizing, acknowledging, and changing the assumptions, beliefs, and values we bring to our relationships that continue to lead to problems can take a significant amount of time, as does building the communication skills, trust, and intimacy necessary to make a relationship a success.
Having facilitated diversity training groups, helped parents of different ethnicities learn effective parenting skills, and led dream workshops for culturally diverse individuals, I have learned that people explore various possibilities and life paths according to the way they perceive the world around them. Therefore, I always strive to help clients incorporate the qualities of their unique experiences into their daily lives and learn from those experiences.
Whether I'm working with an individual adult or couple, I place emphasis on each client's uniqueness, help them develop the skills they need, and help them resolve the immediate problems they face, so that they can overcome any crisis they face, increase their personal understanding and growth, and make decisions that help them move their lives forward in the direction they desire.
Below is a partial list of the types of issues and concerns I work with on a regular basis:
- Crisis management
- Communication skills
- Relationship problems or conflicts (in both individual and couples counseling)
- Pre-marital counseling
- Low self-esteem, self-criticism, and lack of self-acceptance
- Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
- Psychological growth
- Grief and loss
- Life transitions (divorce, change of jobs, major move, etc.)
- Stress management
- Work dissatisfaction and conflicts with fellow employees
- Family issues
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)
I have also recently incorporated Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy into my work with clients. When a trauma occurs, the pictures, sounds, thoughts, and feelings of the experience often become locked in our nervous systems.
EMDR therapy involves the stimulation of eye movements in ways similar to what occurs during REM or dream sleep in order to unlock the nervous system and allow the mind and body to process traumatic experiences.
