Individual and Group Therapy for Adults

A major goal in counseling is finding solutions for problems in relationships. I have provided crises intervention and emergency counseling to individuals, and families to improve their relationship and find solutions to their crisis by increasing personal growth, and making a positive career decision, I have helped them with their life advancement. With managed care often restricting or reducing the number of sessions available, I believe it is important to be focused and goal-oriented in finding practical answers or solutions to the problems. I will at times suggest homework assignments recommend readings which the client can pursue between sessions to enhance the process. These are, of course, not required, but are offered as suggestion to clients.

Some clients like to develop coping skills, and for some finding a solution to the problem is important. In counseling sessions, I place emphasis on skill-building as well as problem resolution. In marriage counseling sessions, I believe improving communications is a significant goal. If medication appears to be needed, I routinely work with a client's primary care physician or psychiatrists in the community.

By working with the culturally diverse individuals I have learned to help them bring the qualities of their experiences into their everyday life and learn from their experiences. I have also noticed that different individuals explore various paths and possibilities according to the way that they perceive life. Therefore I am immensely aware of diversities that exist in our communities. I have facilitated diversity training in a group workshop where I was able to teach and learn about the cultural diversity. I also have helped ethnically and culturally diverse individuals with parenting techniques. Facilitating dream workshop, using symbols, has been very effective in working with culturally diverse individuals.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing

I have also recently incorporated Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy into my work with clients. When a trauma occurs, the pictures, sounds, thoughts and feelings of the experience often become locked in the nervous system. EMDR therapy involves the stimulation of eye movements in ways similar to what occurs during REM or dream sleep in order to unlock the nervous system and allow the mind and body to process traumatic experiences.

Therapist directed lateral eye movements are the most commonly used external stimulus in EMDR therapy, but a variety of other stimuli including hand-tapping and audio stimulation are often used. Regardless of the method, is important to remember that although the therapist helps you create the necessary stimulus it is your own brain that does the healing and that you are the one in control.

EMDR, like other therapeutic techniques, is not a one-session cureall. However, upon completing EMDR therapy, clients often report that their emotional distress has been greatly decreased or eliminated entirely, and that they have gained important insights leading them to positive and lasting behavioral and personal change. At the end of EMDR therapy, previously disturbing memories and present situations should no longer be problematic, and new healthy responses should be the norm.
